How Hite Digital Joined The #StayHome Initiative
April 27, 2020
It’s been over two weeks since the Hite Digital team had our last in-person team meeting and decided to join the #StayHome initiative to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Although we’d been washing our hands constantly for a week, Lysoled our desks, and used liberal amounts of the disinfectant gels placed around the office, we knew it couldn’t go on forever. The best move was to start working from home since we were privileged enough to do so.
We were all a bit nervous — not just for the situation, but for our team. Though we adapted our work routine quickly to our home lives, we worried about losing that human connection with each other. At Hite, culture is everything. Could our culture survive when everybody was at home? When would we grow as a team and a family?
So we made sure it happened.
First thing every morning, our team used to gather in our office for a team huddle. Now, we (you guessed it) have Zoom huddles every day at 7 am, cracking jokes about people’s sleepy morning faces and waving hello to teammates’ children.
During the day, we share our progress, questions, and wins through Slack, shouting out teammates for their learning, growth, hard work, and dedication.
We even remind each other to take care of ourselves and keep preventing the spread.
At 11 am on Mondays (and in smaller groups throughout the week), our leadership coach, Jose Bolanos, leads us in breathing exercises to manage stress. We also share how we’re coping with our new contexts and what we’ve learned from the experience.
Normally, we invite a local speaker to our Talks at Hite every week. Since we couldn’t gather in our training room anymore, we hopped back on Zoom on Friday afternoon. Our first Talk was a virtual yoga session with a local coach. The next week, Wordstream’s Director Of Strategic Partnerships and PPC expert Mark Irvine told us about the effects of COVID-19 on digital marketing, all the way from his Boston apartment.
Outside of office hours, we encourage each other to set self-development goals and keep each other accountable, whether we’re working out, learning a language, or learning to bake.
Until it’s safe to be together again, Hite Digital’s team will keep social distancing and encourage everyone to join the #stayhome initiative, while also maintaining our culture in new and creative ways. As we all take the measures we can in our personal and professional lives to stop the spread of the virus, we can remember that human connection is one of the most important things we have.
