COVID-19 in California: The Most Affected Industries
Aug 17, 2020
COVID-19 came to change everyone’s life, personally and business-wise. After almost eight months since the first COVID-19 patient was reported in the United States, businesses keep learning how to survive and thrive despite the pandemic.
As of August 3rd, there are 512,849 confirmed cases in California. The number is still scary; however statewide COVID-19 positivity rate has decreased to 6.4%, and many businesses reopened, following social distancing guidelines.
It’s undeniable that most industries would be affected by the economic disruption from COVID-19, and we started seeing it in the massive layoffs that happened between March and April. According to the California Budget & Policy Center, based on the number of jobs from 2019 in California, these are the industries that would be immediately affected by COVID-19:
We’ve also seen how transportation and warehousing industries have been an exemption due to the increased demand for jobs to support online shopping.
It’s been hard, especially for those businesses that weren’t prepared for a crisis or that didn’t manage to transition fast enough from in-store sales to online sales. Even industries that already operated online as retail have been hit hard. We can see as an example, JC Penney that filed for bankruptcy in May.
Get Ready for Changes
All of this information is not meant to be discouraging. Instead, be open to new opportunities and find ways to move forward. Especially now that Americans are more knowledgeable about how to manage the crisis. The pandemic won’t last forever, and during uncertain times there’s always a window for innovation, starting new businesses, or even growth.
Digital marketing is a way to grow your business, depending on the industry you may benefit from PPC, SEO, Social Media, or a combination of them. In PPC we’ve seen how costs in Search and Display have decreased and how more people trust online shopping and services, including online medical consultations.
As more business owners start to reopen their stores and gradually begin receiving clients in California, it’s the perfect opportunity to invest in marketing, especially for those that haven’t been affected as much as others. Instead, some of the industries that have been hiring and investing due to new demand are:
- Teleworking software, like Zoom and Slack. With so many people working remotely, they’ve increased 44% over the last five years.
- Grocery stores
- Pharmacies / Health and medical
- Technical support
- Personal care
- On-demand media
- E-learning and digital tools
