COVID-19 in California: Affected Businesses in Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, and El Dorado Counties
Aug 17, 2020
COVID-19 seems like a never-ending story in 2020, but instead of giving up, we have to start looking at the bigger picture and take advantage of the opportunities businesses could have.
The California Budget & Policy Center, based on the number of non-seasonal jobs of 2019 in Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, and El Dorado Counties, speculated the type of businesses that would be most affected by COVID-19 would be:

However, in these counties, we could see how industries like transportation and warehousing didn’t have a considerable impact, and although in a lower scale, reflects a similar behavior to 2019, with no pandemic:

We did see a substantial hit as predicted in the leisure and hospitality industry, with up to 14,700 lost jobs between El Dorado, Placer, Yolo, and Sacramento Counties.
However, despite losses, it’s expected for the industry to start recovering soon enough as more restrictions are being lifted. People are beginning to go out and cope with the virus. For example, restaurants are already allowing in-person dining, although following regulations and guidelines to prevent virus transmission.
Room for Innovation
It’s not all dark in times of crisis. This year, during the annual TechEdge conference held online in Sacramento, Marrone, one panelist, said: “We are creating a nice innovation ecosystem driven by UC Davis.”
