COVID-19 in California: Affected Businesses in Fresno County

Like all the other California counties, Fresno County’s economy has been hit hard due to COVID-19. At the beginning of March, the California Budget & Policy Center extended an article estimating that the industries with the highest employment number in 2019 would be the most affected, such as leisure and hospitality, and retail trade:

And yes, as expected, during the first months after the virus outbreak in the United States, there was a noticeable increase in the unemployment rate. However, between July and August have started to go down in Fresno County.
Businesses Are Starting to Rise
After losses, there are several businesses in Fresno County that are starting to rise. They have adjusted to a new way of operating and have started to employ new people; some of those business industries are:
- Trade, transportation, and utilities – With an employment increase of 8,600 jobs between July 2020 and August 2020: Retail trade (1K jobs), transportation and warehousing (900 jobs), and wholesale trade (100 jobs).
- Farm employment – 1,900 jobs increase.
- Educational and health services – 1,700 jobs increase.
- Professional and business services – 1,100 jobs increase.
- Manufacturing payrolls – 900 jobs increase.
